THE STORY THAT FORMED ME INFORMS HOW I HELP YOU TODAY

1970

A boy who needed some…

A boy who needed someone in his corner, but didnt have it.

As a kid, Steven was raised on grit, work hard, don't complain, don't talk about what's hard. His mother worked nights to hold things together, and by the time he was ten, Steven was effectively raising his younger brother while she worked the overnight shift. He learned early that you handle things yourself, quietly. The defining memory from this period: getting beaten up by a school bully, riding to the hospital in silence beside his mother, with no one — not even her — able to talk to him about what had happened. He was lonely, but it never showed. It went into sports instead.

A boy who needed someone in his corner, but didnt have it.

1984

the athlete who kept…

the athlete who kept breaking, and kept trying to win.

Steven grew tall fast — 6'5", on every college recruiting list, a legitimately serious athletic prospect. Then his body started failing him. A hamstring tear mid-season cost him in front of scouts. A coach told him he was "defective" and accused him of faking the injury. He transferred, kept playing, tore the same hamstring again in front of a different coach his senior year. He kept pushing — got bigger, switched positions, by 1988 he was 6'5", 300 pounds and one of the largest prospects in the draft class. Then one day he simply stopped. He realized he'd spent years climbing the wrong ladder,

the athlete who kept breaking, and kept trying to win.

1990

be a tom delaney for…

be a tom delaney for one person, because he changed my life

At eighteen, after football, Steven wanted to box. His coach Tom Delaney was the first person who actually saw him — not just his potential as an athlete, but him. Tom was compassionate, present, and showed Steven what it looked like to have someone genuinely in your corner, inside the ring and out. When Steven lost a fight in front of a large crowd and felt like a total failure, Tom told him he'd only been training six months and had still made it to the Golden Gloves — that he should be proud. Steven couldn't hear it in the moment. All he felt was loss. But the lesson stayed with him for the rest of his life.

2000

becoming the mindset…

becoming the mindset coach, after years of helping pros.

Steven moved to LA and opened what he describes as the first strength and conditioning center in the country, working as a personal trainer. Through that work he kept noticing the same pattern — limiting beliefs holding people back, in his clients and in himself. He discovered NLP, tested it on himself, and around 1999–2000 made the decision to shift from physical training into mental performance coaching. He moved from a more casual approach to working seriously with business leaders and executives, at a time when almost no one outside of figures like Tony Robbins was doing this kind of work.

Steven began getting more executive clients asking him to work with their kids. Around the same time, a producer approached him about a TV pilot called "The A-Game," built around a boxer. He loved the concept enough to launch his coaching work under that name. From there, the work with student athletes grew — first informally, then as a developed system, eventually expanding into NFL and combine-prep athletes. He has since coached athletes who've earned scholarships, gone pro, and built lifelong mental strength, and has worked with over 40 current NFL players across the league.

Steven’s non-negotiable beliefs

These beliefs fuel the power of A-Game READY® coaching & programs

No. 1

You are more than you believe you are.

The beliefs holding someone back aren’t permanent. Once they’re identified and removed, real change becomes visible and fast.

No. 2

We do it ourselves, but never do it alone.

You may walk this path of change yourself, but that doesn’t mean you’re walking that path alone. We need a community and people to empower us.

No. 3

Time is the most important relationship.

Change doesn’t happen by accident. It happens when someone takes control of how they spend their time, energy, and attention.

No. 4

I want you to feel safe to be yourself here.

Before any tool or technique is implemented it is critical for any athlete or a child to feel safe enough to be honest about what’s happening.

No. 5

I’ll be your mirror, to help you see where to change.

Most of what holds an athlete back is invisible to them from the inside. My job is to reflect it back clearly and without judgment, so you can see the pattern for yourself and decide what you want to change.

Some of my accomplishments and fun facts.

Decades of work
it isn’t just a philosophy, IT’S A PROVEN METHOD.

What A-Game Ready®’s Steven Griffith offers you

  • Strength & conditioning background

Exercise science degree and a C.S.C.S. — he opened one of the first private elite performance centers in the US.

  • A performance coach, not a sports psychologist

He came up through performance and added the psychology to it. Most arrive the other way around.

  • Root-cause coaching, not symptom coaching

Change the belief driving the problem and the symptoms stop reappearing somewhere else.

  • Works with the athlete and the parent

He talks with each of you, then brings you together for one integrated conversation.

  • A whole-life view, not just game day

Nothing is only athletic and nothing is only personal — it is all connected, so the work covers all of it.

  • A full toolbox, not one technique

Communication, self-compassion, receiving feedback, routines, and the tools to hold them together.

  • 25+ years and 25,000+ hours

Two decades teaching mindfulness, plus Timefulness® — his own work on performance and time.

  • He has been the athlete who needed a coach

Golden Gloves boxer, Illinois State Heavyweight Champion, college football — and the injuries that ended it.

No. A-GAME Coaching is performance mindset coaching focused on developing the mental skills needed for confidence, focus, resilience, and peak performance. It is not therapy, counseling, or mental health treatment. Therapy addresses mental health challenges and emotional healing. A-GAME focuses on performance improvement—helping athletes, parents, leaders, and individuals build the mindset, tools, and strategies to consistently perform at their best.

Team and school sports psychologists provide an important service, but they are often responsible for supporting an entire athletic department or organization—sometimes hundreds of athletes. Working with an independent performance coach gives you someone who is dedicated solely to your growth, performance, and goals. You receive personalized coaching, consistent accountability, and strategies tailored specifically to your needs. An outside coach also serves as an objective advocate whose priority is your long-term success—not the interests of a team, school, or organization. Because the relationship is independent, you have a trusted professional focused on helping you perform at your highest level, navigate challenges, and make decisions that are in your best interest both on and off the field.
