How coaching How 1on1 Coaching With Your Athlete Works

THE student ATHLETE’S JOURNEY WITH ME

This isn’t a coaching style that forces an end date on your child. This is a relationship built around who they are, where they want to go, what’s quietly been holding them back, and what you’re willing to do for them.

“it’s hard to get started, it’s hard to do it alone. but we’re going to do this together”

Step No. 1

Not everyone would be a best fit for the process of 1-on-1 coaching. It isn't about what works and doesn't work, it's about what you're willing to do in order to transform their life.

Quote from Carter Tucker, Student Athlete With $250k Full Ride

“ the skills help me so much, especially my performance”

Step No. 2

begin key onboarding & discovery

An assessment on what is driving the dysfunction that they are dealing with, and what we need to work on to close the gap between where they are and where they want to be.

  • Legacy and identity interview — where do they want to go?
  • Identify your strengths and the beliefs holding them back
  • Map their values, your why, and their performance gap
  • Begin rewriting their belief system from the ground up

Steven Griffith’s Core Philisophy

“i’m here to help you bridge the gap: of where you are and where you want to be.

Step No. 3

begin active coaching, closing the gap

I'm available 24/7 for them, their performance training and for their life needs.

  • Pre-Performance routine built around how they actually operate.
  • RPM gauge — read and regulate their nervous system
  • Mindfulness and presence for high pressure moments

A Parents Perspective, Father of Carter Tucke

“who he was and who he is now is totally different. he’s completely engaged and ready”

Step No. 4

Measure progress. Watch things shift.

I track what's working and adjust through the relationship we continue to build together. Athletes who commit to this see real changes in performance, confidence, and communication faster than they expected. This is where we start building consistent skills.

  • Self-compassion — how to be in their own corner
  • Learn how to receive feedback better
  • Post-performance evaluation that compresses time
  • Communication with coaches and teammates
  • Values, purpose, and the why that sustains performance

Mikalynn Emanualli, SDSU Softball Athlete

I have always had the dream of playing Division I softball in college, and now it’s a reality. I knew I was talented but felt I could use more confidence.

Step No. 5

they perform differently. You live differently.

Once they’ve built the base of skills, we transition into a more maintenance approach. I become a sounding board available when you need me, not hovering when you don't. This is what it means to have someone truly in your corner.

  • A belief system that works for them, not against them
  • Tools to regulate, reset, and perform under any pressure
  • I’m Available 24/7 however you need.
  • Less frequent sessions — you lead, I support
  • A relationship with time and self-worth that outlasts the sport

You’ve maybe never hired a mindset coach, so what makes a good one?

what makes a good mindset coach anyway?

Your student athlete

a good mindset coach

be a tom delaney for one person, because he changed my life.

A great mindset coach is someone who knows what it’s like to need a coach.

be a tom delaney for one person, because he changed my life.

At eighteen, after football, Steven wanted to box. His coach Tom Delaney was the first person who actually saw him — not just his potential as an athlete, but him. Tom was compassionate, present, and showed Steven what it looked like to have someone genuinely in your corner, inside the ring and out...

Why choose Steven?

What A-Game Ready®’s Steven Griffith offers you

  • Strength & conditioning background

Exercise science degree and a C.S.C.S. — he opened one of the first private elite performance centers in the US.

  • A performance coach, not a sports psychologist

He came up through performance and added the psychology to it. Most arrive the other way around.

  • Root-cause coaching, not symptom coaching

Change the belief driving the problem and the symptoms stop reappearing somewhere else.

  • Works with the athlete and the parent

He talks with each of you, then brings you together for one integrated conversation.

  • A whole-life view, not just game day

Nothing is only athletic and nothing is only personal — it is all connected, so the work covers all of it.

  • A full toolbox, not one technique

Communication, self-compassion, receiving feedback, routines, and the tools to hold them together.

  • 25+ years and 25,000+ hours

Two decades teaching mindfulness, plus Timefulness® — his own work on performance and time.

  • He has been the athlete who needed a coach

Golden Gloves boxer, Illinois State Heavyweight Champion, college football — and the injuries that ended it.

Frequently Asked Questions

About coaching for student athletes

He meets athletes where they are. The work is framed around getting an edge and performing better, not "fixing" them.

Athletes get direct access for important situations or emergencies. Parents are kept in the loop appropriately.

You stay informed and supported. The direct coaching is with the athlete, while parents receive clear guidance on how to help and have access to the online program as well.

A-GAME Coaching complements—not replaces—your athlete's sport coaches. While team coaches focus on physical skills, strategy, and performance, Steven develops the mental skills that help athletes get the most from that coaching. As an independent performance coach, he also provides a trusted, objective perspective and a supportive advocate outside the team or school environment.

Best results are typically seen with athletes 13 and older who are serious about improving. Depending on maturity, Steven has successfully worked with younger athletes as well.

Most athletes work with Steven for 4–12 months to build and master the A-GAME system. Many families notice improvements in focus, confidence, and emotional regulation within the first few weeks. Once athletes learn the system, they can continue applying the tools independently, while many choose to stay connected with Steven throughout their athletic careers. Ongoing coaching, annual development, and tune-up sessions help athletes continue evolving, improving, and performing at their highest level year after year.

Yes. We believe everyone deserves the opportunity to grow, regardless of their financial circumstances. If the investment is currently beyond your reach, please contact us to discuss your situation. A limited number of need-based scholarships and complimentary access opportunities are available. We are committed to ensuring that no motivated individual is turned away solely because of financial challenges.

School counselors support students with academic, personal, and social challenges. Sports psychologists often focus on mental performance through assessment and psychological techniques. Steven is a performance coach focused on helping athletes build a competitive mindset, develop practical performance skills, and consistently access their best under pressure, both on and off the field.
